Grizzly in profile

A few minutes after the head-on shot, the same bear turned broadside, giving a clean look at the shoulder hump that separates a grizzly’s silhouette from a black bear’s at any distance. It’s pure muscle, built for digging out roots and rodent burrows.

Getting the shot

The light had come up slightly from the earlier frame, dropping the ISO need. Profile shots like this are worth waiting for after a head-on encounter — they show off the anatomy in a way a straight-on portrait can’t.
