Fly on a fence post

Not every backyard subject needs to be rare to be worth a frame. This one landed on a fence post and held still long enough to show off the compound eyes and the fine venation in the wings — details that are invisible at a glance but obvious at macro distance.

Why it matters

Flies get dismissed as a nuisance, but as a group they’re major pollinators and a huge part of the food web, feeding everything from birds to spiders. Their compound eyes can contain thousands of individual lenses, giving them a nearly 360-degree field of view.

Getting the shot

A straightforward macro setup — 105mm, moderate aperture, and patience. The weathered gray wood gave a clean, low-contrast background that let the fly’s sheen and eye color carry the frame.
