Green heron skimming the water

Green herons fly low and fast between fishing spots rather than circling like a great blue heron, and this one cut straight across the lake just a foot or two above the surface, legs trailing and bill tucked for speed. The reeds behind it gave the whole frame a wash of unbroken green.

Why it matters

Green herons are one of the few bird species known to use tools — they’ll drop bait like insects or bread onto the water’s surface to lure fish within striking range, a behavior documented at ponds and lakes across their range.

Getting the shot

A fast shutter and a level pan kept the bird sharp while the reeds behind it blurred into a soft field of color. Low, flat light over the water made the yellow legs and eye ring the brightest thing in the frame without any extra help in post.
