Sandhill crane stretching

The same crane from the meadow portrait, moments later, throwing both wings straight up in a full stretch — a normal maintenance behavior, not a display, though it looks just as dramatic either way. The wingspan on a sandhill crane can reach nearly six feet, easy to underestimate when the bird is standing still.

Getting the shot

A fast enough shutter to freeze the wings without motion blur, timed for the peak of the stretch when both wings were fully vertical and symmetrical — a half-second earlier or later and the pose loses its shape entirely.
