Shenandoah National Park

Blue Ridge Mountains, Virginia

Best seasons
fall, winter
Best time
Sunrise from an east-facing overlook, or last light for the ridgeline
Access
Entrance fee required. Skyline Drive overlooks are paved and roadside.

Skyline Drive runs 105 miles along the spine of the Blue Ridge, with more than 70 overlooks that turn a scenic drive into an entire portfolio of mountain light. Fog pools in the valleys most mornings through late fall, and the ridgeline itself catches the first and last color of the day.

Overlooks are pull-offs directly on the drive, so most shots need very little hiking. Fall weekends are crowded and the drive can close for weather or bear activity — check the park’s road status before heading up.
