One tree still burning

Most of this slope is standing dead timber — a scar from wildfire years past — which made the one tree still holding bright orange leaves stand out even more against the bare gray trunks around it. Nature doesn’t wait for a clean canvas to put on a show.

Why it matters

Wildfire has reshaped parts of the Smokies more than once in recent memory, most notably the 2016 Chimney Tops fire, and slopes like this one are still visibly recovering — a mix of skeletal snags and the slow return of understory growth.

Getting the shot

The long lens compressed the scene, isolating the one colorful tree against the rock and standing deadwood without needing to crop tightly in post. A moderate aperture kept enough of the surrounding slope legible to tell the story.
